I’m Sam. I live in Park City, Utah with my wife Grace, our three kids, and Satchmo. We moved here from Louisiana in the summer of 2026.
Work
I’m a Senior Consultant at Excella, a federal IT consulting firm, serving as a Ruby/Rails technical point of contact across four applications at USCIS.
Before software
I spent eight years in oil and gas engineering and project management after a mechanical engineering degree from Ohio State. Even got the itch to start my own business which I ended up selling in 2021. The transition to software wasn’t a clean break — it started off as more of a curiosity than anything. Ultimately, I came to the realization that programming offered two things:
- The ability to build cool things.
- An outlet to exercise my creativity (or lack thereof)
What I’m into
-
Fishing. Bass and fly fishing. Currently trying to learn how to use a tenkara rod.
-
Beekeeping. Avid keeper with the desire to set all of my neighbors up with hives; fascinated by the hive superorganism and the importance of their role in our ecosystem. Want to talk bees? Reach out!
-
Building. Building things brings me joy. One of my best works was converting an old van into into a camper that my wife and I used to travel all over the western US and Canada. Those memories will serve as the source of many stories and folklore to our kids as they grow up.
-
Camping. Grew up camping with my Dad. Continued with a rock climbing obession in college, now it’s a vehicle for making memories with my kids.
-
BBQ. Splitting wood is one of my favorite forms of meditation. Few things better in life than serving brisket to your loved ones.
-
Reading. Mostly non-fiction. Generally a balance between programming and life. Currently working through:
The Comfort Crisis
Thinking Fast and Slow
